Red Bull’s Bangkok Past

Pretty interesting background on the creator of Red Bull. Austrian entrepreneur and former marketing executive Dietrich Mateschitz actually discovered the drink in Thailand, which was previous called Krating Daeng (see below)

Dietrich found the concoction to be a great deterrent against jet lag during business trips, and thus used his marketing skills to change the flavor a bit and launch it globally, after realizing these revitalizing syrups did very well in Asia.

Krating Daeng drink creator Chaelo Yoovidhya, who Dietrich partnered with for all the secret ingredients, is now the wealthiest person in Thailand with an estimated net worth of $4 Billion.

More Cash for Pete Cashmore (Mashable CEO)

Great Bloomberg Venture interview below with Pete Cashmore (CEO of Mashable). I recently saw Pete in Forbes’s 30 under 30 which states “with 20 million monthly unique visitors, [Mashable] is almost as large as Huffington Post was when AOL bought it for $315 Million last year”

Mashable is:

-One of the most profitable blogs on the internet
-The second most linked to blog only after the Huffington Post
-Top 10 Blog within a year and half after launching

Cashmore describes his background, the rise of Mashable’s vast audience, and the site’s monetization.

Where’s the Beef? Dave Thomas Bio

Wanted to share a great video biography piece on Dave Thomas of Wendy’s which aired recently on CNBC.

I couldn’t find the full video online yet but have added the short bio below:

Interesting to see Dave learned the ropes from none other than Colonel Sanders of KFC

If you can catch the full CNBC video currently airing, it has some great information into the highly competitive burger business during the 80′s and strong rivalry between Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Burger King.

Also detailed is the famous “Wheres the Beef” marketing campaign, which became a prominent phrase and was even mentioned during in the 1984 presidential election.

Great old school video below of Steve Jobs rocking a solid beard and dishing some sound advice.

Jobs discusses how he called Bill Hewlett (co-founder of HP) at age 12, landing a summer job.

Entrepreneur’s Favorite Books

I have listed some of my favorite books HERE.

The Arrogance Cycle

I wanted to share a book I enjoyed recently called The Arrogance Cycle by Michael K Farr. It gives a detailed, comedic, and inside look at the emotions, entitlements, arrogance, and detached reality some investors have (both on Wall Street and Main Street). For anyone who enjoyed Michael Lewis’s Liar’s Poker you will enjoy The Arrogance Cycle.

In the context of our current recession, it is an amazing book, which reflects on the causes of surges and bursts, and analyzes the psychology and fundamentals of human behavior.

A great passage from Farr’s book:

“Optimism is a magnet. Who among us would not like to believe that tomorrow will be better than today – that we have the potential to be richer, more powerful, happier, and more content? It’s written into the human DNA. Unfortunately, the ingredients of optimism are too often the same ingredients that go into arrogance, and they’re largely driven by the subtleties of hope and a desire for certainty”

Wisdom like the above should help savy investors avoid the next inevitable surge and burst in the market. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Michael K Farr is the president of Farr, Miller & Washington, LLC and a guest commentator for CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg and Reuters. Michael previously wrote the book A Million is Not Enough: How to Retire with the Money You’ll Need.
